5 Artists
4 Afternoons
3 Park and Rec Staff
2 Studio sessions per day
1 Neighborhood full of excited children
And YOU! Many of you already know of the successes of the Afterschool Arts Program (ASAP), which connects fine art with neighborhood children. Many of you have contributed to this effort which has touched many lives of children and families from the Martin Luther King and Moulton Elementary Schools. We are taking the next step by planning a festive summer camp right in the neighborhood where the children live.
Invited artists may lead studio sessions such as Found Object Sculpture, Capoeira, Hip Hop, World Drumming, Origami and Paper Art, and Digital Photography.
Our vision is a four day, five studio "art village" under shade tents in the Evelyn K. Davis Park, 12:30-3 pm, August 3-6, 2009; closing with a neighborhood hot dog cookout. We are pleased to announce a partnership with the Evelyn K. Davis Park and Rec Summer Program, whose director, Ms. Shannon Sandburg, is working closely with us to plan details. She and her small staff will actually work with us, side by side. And we will have the additional support of Sgt. Edwards, the dedicated neighborhood police officer whose mission is to build long term relationships.
Transportation and registration will not be an issue. The summer program attracts generally 80-95 children each day. Those who wish to join the ASAP Summer Arts Program will simply go through a daily check-in process. The children will participate in two studios each day, with a water break in between. Generally speaking, here's the daily schedule:
11:15 am free Park and Rec lunch program
noon - 4 pm free Park and Rec summer program (an all summer program upon which we are piggy backing)
12:30-1 pm ASAP Summer Arts Camp daily student check-in (studio assignments and nametags)
1 - 1:45 pm ASAP Summer Arts Camp STUDIO I
1:45-2 pm water break -- drink, bathroom, sprinklers
2-3 pm ASAP Summer Arts Camp STUDIO II
3 pm ASAP Summer Arts Camp is dismissed. Children may go home or stay at the park for the continuation of the longer summer program.
4 pm on Thursday -- Hotdogs and Celebration
Studio Assistants and as Hot Dog Cookout Specialists volunteer service positions are available. If you can join us for an energetic day or an enthusiastic week, please contact Terri Speirs, ASAP Summer Arts Camp Coordinator. Tel: 515-770-5155. Email: terrispeirs@yahoo.com.
